Why Did We Choose Magnesium?

It's a fair question and we have developed the love for this particular mineral over the years of practice. As a naturopath and osteopath, seeing clients in pain or stress is a daily occurrence. Magnesium has the potential to greatly change conditions such as those, and create a real difference for those individuals. Let’s look at some fun facts about this nurturing mineral.

🌊 It's one of the most abundant minerals in the body

Magnesium is the fourth most abundant mineral in the human body. It plays several important roles in the health of your body and brain. It regulates protein synthesis and muscle building, maintains healthy nerve function, regulates blood pressure and keeps a healthy heartbeat, sustains optimal immune function, it is responsible for helping bone to form, has a role in DNA and RNA synthesis and repair and also contributes to the production of antioxidants within your body. However, you may not be getting enough of it, even if you eat a healthy diet.

🌊 It's an incredibly common deficiency nowadays

Magnesium deficiency can be due to poor diet, or due to candida, parasites, bacteria or fungi within the body, which are large consumers of magnesium. What happens here is a “competition”, they take a large percentage and then the body is left with less magnesium than it needs to function properly.

Additionally, a lot of our foods are becoming depleted in magnesium due to modern-day farming where crops are not rotated and the land is not rested. To include more magnesium in your diet - see this blog.

🌊 It supports a natural stress response (in this high stress society, that's important)

One of those pathways helps to modulate the stress response through the HPA axis. Stress and anxiety are a presentation of the stress response being triggered; a sign your body does not feel safe. Magnesium in the brain helps to inhibit the excitatory neurotransmitter, glutamate, while supporting GABA activity in order to keep us calm. Consistent and repetitive activation of the fight or flight response can deplete magnesium stores.

🌊 It's excellent for relieving sports and growing pains

Like anyone, using our muscles for an extended time tends to make them sore. While we can eat the right foods and lengthen our muscles all we want, there are some occasions where a nice mini-massage with some magnesium cream just changes your recovery. If you’d like to read more about this, we’ve got a blog post here.

🌊 It can help improve sleep patterns

In a similar way to how magnesium supports our stress response, it can also help calm it down and support healthy sleep patterns. Not having enough magnesium in your system can cause troubled sleep and even insomnia. Stress also changes how we sleep, so these two go hand in hand. Along with a healthy diet, magnesium can help to deepen our sleep, promoting a deep, restorative sleep.
